A South German ormolu figural automaton clock
Circa 1590
The spreading circular base embellished with arabesque strapwork and pierced arcading around the bell, raised on claw feet, housing a twin barrel movement with verge escapement and countwheel strike on bell (movement with alterations and adaptations), surmounted by the figure of a turbanned Turk holding a sword in his right hand and supporting a standard surmounted by a celestial globe in the left, the movement with indirect drive via the staff to the revolving globe with Roman hours indicated by a monkey seated astride it (later pointer), and also to the arm of the Turk who drops his sword at the strike of the hour
