West Turkmenistan, early 19th century
The rust-red field with five columns of ten linked Tekke guls divided by hooked secondary cruciform guls, in a panelled border of octagons containing flowerheads divided by cross-panels with a variety of motifs between kotchak and barber-pole stripes, a long striped kilim strip at each end, very slight wear, a few small repairs

Lot Essay

This Tekke carpet displays a very unusual feature within the main guls. Instead of having the diagonal variation in colour between indigo and sea-green from one gul to another, it is here, with a few exceptions, within each gul itself, although the minor guls alternate their colour as normal.
