A TRANSITIONAL RAPIER
Dutch (?) circa 1660
With tapering blade (associated) of flattened-diamond section changing to flattened octagonal section at the forte, stamped on each face with the spurious date 1553 and a running wolf mark inlaid in copper, the steel hilt comprising assymetrical shells, arms, short, flat straight quillons widening towards the tips, compressed ovoidal pommel, and later silver-bound wooden grip, the metal surfaces inlaid throughout with copper and silver rosettes
