Sugata [configuration]: honzukuri, iorimune, narrow, thick, deep koshizori with chu-kissaki
Kitae [forging pattern]: itame with mokume, jinie and chikei
Hamon [tempering pattern]: suguha of ko-nie
Boshi [tip]: komaru
Horimono [carvings]: bohi with squared end on both sides, remain of soken on tachi-omote
Nakago [tang]: suriage, kiri end, sujikai file marks, three holes
In shirasaya [plain wood scabbard]
Koshirae [set of mounts]: black lacquered scabbard, the hilt bound with white leather over black-lacquer samegawa, the fuchi-kashira carved with monkeys cavorting around a tree on a shakudo ground with details in gold inlay, the menuki of hares in shakudo with gold details, the tsuba black-patinated iron with a filed ground and longitudinal rectangular piercings, late Edo period

Sori [curvature]: 2.3cm.
Motohaba [width at start of tempered edge]: 2.75cm.

Lot Essay

Accompanied by a certificate of registration as 48th Juyo Token [Important Sword] no.11319 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai [Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword] on 11 October 2002.

This smith is known as Ryumon Nobuyoshi. His work is quite rare. He was probably connected to the Senju-in school and worked in two styles. A subdued typical Yamato style as in this blade, or a Bizen like midareba.
