Lot Essay

A study for a falling figure in Cabanel's 1870 ceiling decoration, The Triumph of Flora originally for the Palais des Tuileries, now at the Louvre. Cabanel's work on the project was halted by the war in 1870 and destroyed during the Commune of 1871. In 1872 Cabanel made a second version of the ceiling design which is the one now at the Louvre.
