(Lacking two preliminary blanks A1-A2 [A1 signed] and Kk8, upper corner of Ii5 repaired with loss of pagination and approximately 10 words [supplied in pencil], some headlines, signatures, and catchwords cropped or shaved, small hole on Y1 affecting a few letters, occasional minor soiling and spotting.) 19th-century blue morocco gilt, edges gilt; quarter morocco folding case. Provenance: Some early annotations and markings to text -- John Camp Williams (bookplate) -- purchased from Seven Gables Bookshop, New York, 9 July 1970. FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT EARLY ANTHOLOGY OF ENGLISH POETRY, CONTAINING NINETY-ONE SELECTIONS FROM SHAKESPEARE. Pforzheimer's state A of the preliminaries with publishers' names in title imprint indicated only by their initials, dedication leaf (A4) uncancelled, and with dedicatory poem signed "R.A." It includes 91 extracts from Shakespeare (most derived from Venus and Adonis and Lucrece, but all from plays or poems printed prior to 1600) and selections from Daniel, Drayton, Jonson, Marlowe, Spenser, Lodge, Harington, Warner, and others.
