AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED BELL-KRATER
Circa Second Quarter of the 4th Century B.C.
The obverse with a youth, perhaps Dionysos, standing to the left, nude but for a mantle draped across his back and over his arms, a kylix hooked on to the fingers of his right hand, a thyrsos in his left with a fillet tied to the stalk, a maenad to the right, draped in a deer skin over a chiton, a waisted situla in her left hand, a fluted oinochoe in her right, a small herm between them, a fillet in the field, details in added white; the reverse with two facing draped youths, one with a staff and one with a strigil; a band of meander and crossed squares below the scenes, laurel below the rim, palmettes and scrolling volutes below the handles, rays around the handle-plates
