AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED OINOCHOE (SHAPE I)

Globular in form on an echinus foot, with a fillet at the join of the neck to the body, a trefoil mouth, and a triple-reeded handle, the large panel with the "Return of Hephaistos," the god riding an ithyphallic mule, accompanied by a troop of satyrs, all moving to the right, the lead satyr with his head turned frontally, the second looking back, the third gripping the mule's flank, and the fourth running and gesticulating wildly, each satyr with red hair, beard and tail, all wearing a garland in added white but the third who holds his in his right hand, with alternating red and black tongues on the shoulders, dipinto in red on the underside of the foot
