AN AUSTRIAN WHEEL-LOCK CARBINE OF THE GUARD (SCHÜTZENKOMPANIE ST. JOHANN) OF WOLF DIETRICH VON RAITENAU, PRINCE ARCHBISHOP OF SALZBURG (R.1587-1612), BY GEORG ZELLNER
Late 16th Century
With two-stage barrel with moulded muzzle, brass fore-sight, struck with maker's mark on the breech, in a shield '.Z.', pierced standing brass back-sight, flat lock struck with maker's mark, in a shield 'TW', a standing figure between (Johan.F.Støckel B5563, p. 933), domed iron wheel-cover, attached key, safety-catch and sliding pan-cover, fruitwood full stock decorated over its length with engraved horn plaques, rosettes and sparse arrangements of ball flowers all within horn lines, including a characteristic pierced cartouche opposite the lock and on both sides of the butt, horn butt-plate engraved around the border, iron trigger-guard, the ramrod-pipe and fore-end cap each of engraved horn, and wooden ramrod with engraved horn tip (three minor pieces of inlay replaced).
