AN ENGLISH DELFT BLUE-DASH ROYAL PORTRAIT CHARGER OF PRINCE GEORGE
CIRCA 1705, LONDON OR BRISTOL
Of deep form, painted in blue, yellow, manganese and green with a figure in armour with a yellow cape and belt holding a baton, flanked by the manganese initials PG and with blue sponged trees on a grassy green mound within a blue and yellow line and blue-dash border, the underside with a green slip and lead glaze
13½ in. (34.3 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

Prince George of Denmark (1653-1708) was consort of Queen Anne, his second cousin. They were married in 1683, he was installed as a Knight of the Garter in 1684 and was chief mourner at the funeral of Charles II. In 1688 he deserted James II in favour of William of Orange and was sworn in as a new privy councillor to the joint sovereigns in 1689 and subsequently created Baron Ockingham, Earl of Kendal and Duke of Cumberland.
