AN ENGLISH SABRE
Mid-17th Century
With curved hollow-ground blade (probably a contemporary association) double-edged towards the point, and struck on each face several times with two crowned marks, one a pair of crossed swords and the other indecipherable, the iron hilt comprising double asymmetrical shells, the outer, and longer one bent towards the blade and pierced and sparsely chiselled in low relief with three circular cartouches framing profile heads, the inner one bent towards the grip and chiselled underneath with conventional foliage, small flat downscrolled rear quillon, flat knuckle-guard, and cap-pommel with beaked heart-shaped top, and chiselled with conventional foliage, the smooth staghorn grip engraved with panels of diagonal and criss-cross lines separated by wider transverse lines with traces of green colouring, and with iron foliated ferrule at the bottom
