Claude Henry Mason Buckle (1803-1894) was a remarkable sailor whose naval career began at Portsmouth Naval college in 1817. In 1841, having seen action all over the world including the capture of Rangoon, he was promoted Commander and given command of HMS Growler, a new steam sloop in which he served with distinction for nearly four years in suppression of the slave trade on the African station. He saw active service for the next 25 years and retired a full Admiral in 1877.
