An unusual 19th-Century fruitwood and whalebone mining dial,
unsigned, the glazed brass compass case with blued-steel needle and clamp, graduated around the circumference 0-90°-0 and with three compass points and a fleur-de-lys engraved on the base, mounted on a fruitwood frame, one arm with an ivory inlay, the other with a shaped and pierced copper plate attached, each with a pierced whalebone sight, the underside with an ivory collar for tripod or staff mounting -- 16in. (40.6cm.) wide
