AN UNUSUAL GERMAN ALL-STEEL CROSSBOW OF SCHNEPPER FORM
EARLY 17TH CENTURY
With slender steel bow with cord string, probably original, two fore-sight pillars with turned cross-piece fitted to the front of the tiller, sliding fore-end cut with a channel for the bolt and small block containing the clip for the string both operated by the lever-arm, the block incorporating a spring-clip to hold the tail of the bolt in position and a folding rear-sight, the lever-arm struck with a gold-lined (some loss) maker's mark of a squirrel and retained by a spring-clip, set trigger, slender trigger-guard, and lightly carved walnut butt of characteristic form inlaid with a bone oval engraved with initials (cleaned bright overall, fore-sight cross-piece probably replaced)
