Lot Essay

Traditionally considered to be by Panini, and still published as such by Ferdinando Arisi in 1986, Andrea Busiri Vici was first to claim this picture as the work of Andrea Locatelli, dating it no later than 1715 and thus seeing it as anticipating the style of Panini's first years in Rome. He describes it as of 'remarkable quality, composition and colouring' and compares it with a pair of similar capriccios in a Roman private collection (op. cit., nos. 7-8, both illustrated in colour p. 29). The attribution to Locatelli has more recently been confirmed by Professor David Marshall.
