Lot Essay

Francis Richardson related the present composition to a drawing of Cupid presenting Psyche to the Gods in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (F.L. Richardson, 1980, op. cit., no. 185, fig. 116). Dr. Richardson further notes that both compositions appear to be adapted from Raphael's fresco in the Farnesina in Rome, and could be projects for the Ca' Collato where, according to the biographer Claudio Ridolfi, Schiavone 'divided the story of Pysche into several compartments'.
