4o (244 x 188 mm). (Title slightly soiled, final leaf darkened.) Contemporary calf-backed marbled boards, green morocco lettering piece on spine (joints weak, minor wear). Provenance: Viscount Bruce (armorial bookplate dated 1712).

"The most important, as well as one of the most extensive private libraries sold by auction in the seventeenth century... The catalouge seems to have been compiled, and written, and probably the sale undertaken, by Thomas Phillipps" (Lawler). Anglesey is "noted as perhaps the first peer who devoted time and money to the formation of a great library" (DNB). Anglesey was a politician who successfully navigated the dangerous shoals of British history between 1645 and his death, playing an important role in Anglo-Irish politics. As Treasurer of the Navy, he was a superior to Pepys. Munby & Coral, p. 6; Wing A-3166.

Sale catalgoue of the outstanding English mathematician and physician of his day. He succeded his friend William Harvey as Lumleian lecturer, and was physician to Charles II, James II, Queen Mary, and Prince George of Denmark.
