Lot Essay

Benjamin Marshall one of the most successful sporting painters at the end of the eighteenth century; his pupils included John Ferneley (1782-1866) and Abraham Cooper (1786-1868). Unusually among sporting artists, Marshall was a very talented portrait painter, and this picture is a fine example of his work.
The jockey is wearing the colours of Sir Charles Bunbury, 6th Bt., (1740-1821), who was a key figure in the English racing world and was known as the 'Perpetual President' of the Jockey Club based at Newmarket. He is still remembered at Newmarket today through the 'Bunbury Mile'. He represented Mildenhall in Parliament for many years and was also Chief Secretary for Ireland at one point in his career.
