8° (162 x 103mm). Woodcut arms of Jeanne d'Albret on title, woodcut ornaments and initials. (Lacks blank 8, some leaves slightly browned, a few small tears and wormholes, most repaired, very occassionally touching letters.) 19th-century red morocco, gilt fillet around covers, gilt fillets on spine (slightly scuffed), olive green watered silk liners and doublures with gilt borders, g.e. Provenance: Royal Library of France (library stamp and duplicate stamp on title); Pedro Abadia (his donation inscription to Morquera Arboleda on endpaper).

First edition of any part of the Bible in Basque, in the dialect of Labourdin, and the second book printed in Basque. The translation was made from the French Geneva version, with reference to the Greek, by Jean Leiarraga, and dedicated to the Protestant Jeanne d'Albret, Queen of Navarre. It was printed in Roman type and published the year before the Massacre of St. Bartholomew, after which the Roman Catholic authorities tried to collect all copies. Darlow & Moule 1958 ('probably not more than 25 copies survive').
