The letters whyche Johan Ashwell Priour of Newnham Abbey besydes Bedforde, sente secretly to the Byshope of Lyncolne, in ... m.d.xxvii. Where in the sayde pryour accuseth George Joye that tyme beyng felow of Peter college in Cambrydge, of fower opinyons: wyth the answere of the sayde George unto the same opynyons. Dated at end 'At Strassburge the 10. daye of June'. [London?: Thomas Raynalde and William Hill?, 1548?].
Small 8° (125 x 85mm). Collation: A-C8 D4. (Running title cropped on many leaves and the first line on 4 leaves.) 19th-century brown morocco by Bedford, edges gilt. Provenance: Cardiff Castle bookplate. Second edition, first published at Antwerp in 1531. Ashwell wrote in 1527 to the Bishop of Lincoln, partly in Latin, partly in English, bitterly complaining of the Lutheran heretical opinions held by George Joye, asking that the letter be kept secret. This letter, however, fell into the hands of Joye, who fled to Strassburg to escape possible charges against him. From there he published Ashwell's letter with an elaborate reply.
