APPARENTLY UNIQUE CALENDAR BROADSIDE. The Augsburg Stadtsbibliothek has a 1695 edition, but the other few surviving copies of the Bauern-Calender are 18th-century editions. The Bauern-Calender orders an astounding amount of information on its single, narrow sheet. It gives sun- and moon-phases, saints' and other feast days, weather predictions, and recommendations of the best days for hair- or nail-cutting, agriculture, medical work, etc. It is printed by Maria Magdalena Utzschneider, wife of Simon Utzschneider and daughter of female printer, Veronica Aperger. She carried on the business after her husband's death in 1689 and remained active in it until her own death in 1704; it was subsequently run by her niece's second husband, J.M. Labhart (cf. Augsburger Buchdruck und Verlagswesen, Wiesbaden: 1997, pp.555-6, 1247-8). It is a remarkable survival, preserving its full extent, including title and imprint.
