Lot Essay

An identical sword is used by King Arthur [Richard Harris] in four pivotal scenes in the film: the knighting of Sir Lancelot, during King Arthur's soliloquy when he contemplates his reign and the affair between Lancelot and Guenevere before the knights take their places at the Round Table, when Guenevere is sentenced to death, and in the finale of the film, when King Arthur knights the young stowaway Tom, who travels to Camelot in order to fight for the King and become a knight of the Round Table. King Arthur knights Tom with Excalibur and then thrusts the sword into the air as he tells him to run from the battle.
