Lot Essay

In Notebooks III, p. 211, Ginner records the sale the of the painting Building a Warship which had been commissioned by the Ministry of Information in 1940 (Imperial War Museum, London, LD252). This work was included in an Exhibition of War Artists' Work at the National Gallery, London in 1940. The present work is a smaller version of this commission.
