Title with large woodcut of Chaucer's coat-of-arms (defective) 2 full-page divisional titles within pictorial woodcut frame, one pictorial headpiece woodcut on B1, woodcut initials. (First and last leaf shorter, some browning and staining, Rrr6 and Sss1 with small chip and tear affecting a few letters.) Modern calf antique.
Fifth Collected Edition, second issue of the Stowe edition, the title has a large woodcut of Chaucer's arms dated 1550, and probably because the blocks were so worn and archaic, the preliminary leaves were printed without any illustrations. This is the edition which, in Bartlett's view, was "probably used by Shakespeare' who drew the story of Troilus and Cressida from Chaucer rather than the Iliad." Bartlett 206; Pforzheimer 176; STC 5076.
