Lot Essay
The present composition is a characteristic work of Teniers early production in Antwerp and according to Dr. Klinge, can be dated to circa 1635.
Dr Klinge further points out in David Teniers der Jüngere. Alltag und Vergnügen in Flandern, 2005, p. 114, that in this period Teniers slowly frees himself from the influence of Adriaen Brouwer. In contrast to the heavy gesturing figures in Brouwers paintings, Teniers prefers to depict his figures with character and dignity. This atmosphere of dignity and calm is further enhanced by a subtle use of colour. The present lot can be compared with the picture entitled Le Bonnet Vert, oil on panel, 39,4 x 37,3 cm., of circa the same time, in the Thyssen Bornemisza collection, Madrid (see M. Klinge et al., op. cit., no. 12, illustrated).
We are grateful to Dr. Margaret Klinge for providing a certificate of authenticity, dated 15 December 2006, after inspection of the original.
