Original gilt-stamped red cloth, spine gilt-lettered, edges gilt (spine spotted); modern cloth slipcase. Provenance: Louisa Maria Miller (c.1844-1919; inscription from the author).

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY CARROLL: 'Mrs Miller from the Author. Jan. 1887'. 'When, on August 6 [1881], Dodgson became re-acquainted with Marion Richards on the beach "his acquaintance... involved 4 others," among them May and Edith Miller. On the twelfth Dodgson called on Mrs. Miller "and saw her (for the first time) and her two sweet children" (Letters p.443n). Dodgson maintained contact with the Millers until his death, though this was sometimes troubled. In 1894, when May was 25 years old, he records 'Dear May Miller was engaged to dine with me, but Mrs. Miller wrote to say that there was "so much ill-natured gossip" afloat, she would rather I did not invite either girl without the other. No doubt it is Mrs. Richards's doing: she means well, but it is a pity she should interfere with other people thus' (Letters p.1034). WMGC described this as 'a most interesting volume, consisting of a facsimile of the first draft of Alice's Adventures in the Author's hand, and [with] illustrations by him' (p.144). Williams, Madan, Green, and Crutch 194.
