Lot Essay

Along with his rival Richard Caton Woodville, Ernest Crofts trained in Dsseldorf under Hnten, himself a pupil of the renowned battle painter Horace Vernet. The present picture is one of several the artist painted of the battle of Waterloo around this date, three of which were exhibited at the Royal Academy: On the morning of Waterloo, 1876, no. 1253, Wellington's march from Quatre Bras to Waterloo, 1878, no. 609, and On the evening of Waterloo, 1879, no. 613. The two former can be seen in the Mappin Art Gallery, Sheffield, whilst the latter is in the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool.
