Lot Essay

A talented painter from an early age, he was a student of Cabanel and Fromentin and debuted at the Salon in 1863. In 1875, his painting La Mort de Ravana, Roi de Louka won him the prize of the Salon. He was awarded the Cross of the Légion d'Honneur and decorated the Musée de Saint-Germain-en-Laye. He became a teacher at l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts and a member of the Institute. Toulouse Lautrec was one of his students.
