"FORTSAS SALE" -- [Renier CHALON.] Catalogue d'une très riche mais peu nombreuse collection de livres provenant de la bibliothèque de feu Mr. le Comte J.-N.-A. de Fortsas. Mons: Emmanuel Hoyois, [not before 10 August 1840].
8o (205 x 130 mm). 8 leaves. Wood-engraved title-vignette. Original marbled wrappers. Bound together with two other Fortsas catalogues, both in original wrappers: the authorized second edition, "deuxieme édition", published in Brussels by G.A. van Trigt [1863]; and the pink-paper issue of the "4me édition corrigée et augmentée", [Hoyois] 1863.
The counterfeit edition, unauthorized by Chalon, NO LESS RARE THAN THE ORIGINAL EDITION. The success and notoriety of the hoax created great demand for the catalogues among the curious and those who had not been privileged enough to be targeted as victim. It is likely but not certain that it was issued by Hoyois (the typographical material is different).
