Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr Marco Ciampolini who, as well as noting the resemblance to drawings by Poppi, kindly brought to our attention a Lamentation over the Dead Christ by the artist (Cleveland, Private Collection; A. Giovannetti, Francesco Morandini, detto il Poppi, Florence, 1995, p. 140, no. 31). The figure of Christ in that picture is supported by an angel in an extremely similar pose, albeit in reverse, to that in the present drawing.
