Painted in 1912, the present work depicts Jean Cadell, the artist's sister who was to become a well-known actress. Bunty and Jean were extremely close as brother and sister. Their mother had died in 1908 and their father died the following year bringing Bunty and Jean even closer. They would make trips together to stay with friends and Jean often features in his paintings around this time.
The present work, showing Jean seated in profile in a white dress and flowered hat in a gentle landscape with a bright ornamental flower garden in the foreground spreading down to a distant parkland, highlights a new direction for the artist with the development of a soft, impressionistic palette.
