GEORGE SHIELD (1804-1880)

Rough Legged Buzzard. Female. Edinburgh: [n.d. but circa 1841], hand-coloured engraved plate "Drawn from nature by Geo. Shield... Engraved by Alex. T.Aikman, Edinb.", image area: 750 x 595mm. (Four small repaired tears.) The plate has an engraved number "XX" above the image (obscured by mount.) Window-mounted, framed and glazed.

RARE. One of six plates produced by Shield for his Ornithologica Britannica. George Shield was born in Tweedmouth on 10th February 1804, the son of a tailor Thomas and his wife Margaret Shield. By 1827 he was established as a master tailor in Wooler, Northumberland, where he remained until his death on January 29th 1880. The influence of Selby (who he met) and Audubon is evident in the plates and Shield clearly intended to follow their lead and issue a small number of plates periodically to subscribers; unfortunately only six plates (in one part, without text, titled on the wrapper) were ever issued. The lack of financial support meant that the plates were only ever issued in small numbers, and Shield gave away many of the individual plates to friends. Cf. Dr Peter Holt in The Northumbrian no.10 Spring 1990. pp.33-36; cf. Nissen IVB 875.
