FIRST EDITION of Gibbs's second work, a book on the architectural orders and their ornamentation. Gibbs realised the discrepancy between the theory and practice of copying Palladio's orders and devised a new method to aid in complex architectural calculations, which is demonstrated in the present work. His method was a success and, despite his attempts to copyright it, it was taken up and disseminated in numerous popular manuals. Harris 259.
