GIBBS, James (1682-1754). Rules for drawing the several parts of architecture. London: W. Bowyer for the Author, 1732.

2° (462 x 294mm). 64 engraved numbered plates. 18th-century speckled calf, gilt spine, marbled endpapers. (Hinges worn, a few small tears.) Provenance: William Morehead (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION of Gibbs's second work, a book on the architectural orders and their ornamentation. Gibbs realised the discrepancy between the theory and practice of copying Palladio's orders and devised a new method to aid in complex architectural calculations, which is demonstrated in the present work. His method was a success and, despite his attempts to copyright it, it was taken up and disseminated in numerous popular manuals. Harris 259.
