A gracious diplomatic letter, exquisitely penned by a secretary on fine paper and signed by the youthful Emperor Hirohito, who had succeeded to the throne in 1926. In perfect French, the formal letter of condolence acknowledges "profound affliction" upon receipt of the letter announcing the death of "his Highness Sultan Prince Kemal Eddine Hussein," a nephew of Fuad I. The Emperor commiserates sincerely with the bereavement felt by the royal family, and proffers "my most sincere condolences," closing with assurances of "high esteem and inalterable amity." Fuad (1868-1936) was Sultan (1917-1922), then King of Egypt when the British protectorate ended. He established Egypt's constitution in 1923.
