Lot Essay
Growing up in Taiwan, Huang Chih Chao moved to New York in his thirties. Although firstly influenced by Abstract Expressionism, Huang later returns to the tradition of Eastern ink painting. He combines bold vivid colours and expressive brush strokes with Eastern art philosophy, creating a completely new kind of ink painting. In Huang's paintings, he frequently uses primary colours to express his inner world. In Landscape (Lot 1259), he uses bright acrylic pigments to create an abstract expressionistic landscape, bringing the viewer a sense of flowing movement. The kind of abstract landscape that Huang creates may not be easily understood at first sight; however, the painter expects viewers to associate his paintings with their personal life experience in order to imagine their own landscapes in mind. In Nude (Lot 1258), the contour of the female nude at the front is composed of merely a few red brush strokes. Leisurely placed under the tree in a surreal landscape, she seems to invite the viewers to enter the dreamy Eastern Arcadia that Huang creates.
