JACOB VAN STRIJ, AFTER MEINDERT HOBBEMA, WOODED LANDSCAPE WITH A RIVER, BLACK CHALK, WATERCOLOR, SIGNED
The paintings by Dutch golden age painters such as Adriaen van de Velde, Paulus Potter and, most importantly, Aelbert Cuyp served as great sources of inspiration for the Dordrecht painter and draughtsman Jacob van Strij. Many of his works are either executed in the style of the Dutch golden painters or are direct copies, as is the case with the present drawing. As indicated by Van Strij’s inscription on the verso of the drawing, this sheet copies a painting by Meindert Hobbema which at the time was at the ‘Teeken Akademie’ in Middelburg, and which is now in the Wallace Collection, London (inv. P75; see S. Duffy and J. Hedley, The Wallace Collection’s Pictures, London, 2004, p. 207, ill.).
