Details
James Dean
A notable hand-written, letter from James Dean to girlfriend Barbara Glenn, dated 5-7-54, the date written in pencil in another hand [most likely the recipient's]; the letter, in blue ink on three sides of two sheets of plain note paper, the second and third sides each signed Love Jim, written in response to ones Dean mentions as receiving only a couple of hours ago, beginning Oh baby, Dean's exasperated start develops into a tone that is one of a very protective, caring boyfriend You know how I am about stuff like that. But god damn it honey with all the gory detail... when I get hold of that son of a bitch., before developing into a more concerned and caring manner, asking of what can be done to help, and saying how much he wanted to see her, even though he would soon be going on location for two weeks, before returning to his current whereabouts, asking maybe you could come out here then? Please tell me if you could, would, etc.... Dean, goes on to explain that he'd had a rough day at the studio before going on to the stable, to ride Cisco, and how conquering him is a long drawn out affair, but Dean does express his admiration for the horse, explicitly stating he's full of life and I love him, before changing the subject back to his schedule, and again asking for Barbara to pay him a visit, where he emphasises his insecurity by adding If you want to? before signing off Love Jim, the second sheet of paper, [the third page of the letter] consists entirely of a post-script in which Dean returns to the subject matter of the circumstances Barbara has found herself in, to the point that he expresses genuine concern, exclaiming in an extremely authoritative manner Listen to me god damn it, before explaining to Barbara her failings $8000 to see you in a bathing suit, boy that's sellin' out cheap, before going on to finish with a cutting, possibly mocking line You've got no god damn respect for yourself , signing off love Jim, 3 pages on 2 sheets of note paper, folded, 63 lines, each - 6¼x10 in. (16x25.5 cm.); accompanied by the original mailing envelope, overlapping date stamps New York and Burbank, Calif., both May 1954 and three unpublished black and white photographs depicting Dean and Barbara on a beach, and another of the couple amongst friends [later printings] each - 8x10 in.
