JAMES FORBES (1749-1819)
Oriental Memoirs ... including Observations on Parts of Africa and South America. London: for the author by T. Bensley, 1813 [but Henry G. Bohn, c.1839]. 4 volumes, 4° (305 x 246mm). Engraved portrait and 121 plates of which 5 lithographic (3 hand-coloured) and the remainder engraved (23 hand-coloured). (Light spotting and browning throughout.) Contemporary maroon roan over pink cloth-covered boards, top edges gilt (extremities rubbed).
BOHN'S EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED REMAINDER ISSUE, collating almost identically as per Abbey's copy. Originally issued in 1813, at the time of the author's death in 1819, the unsold copies of Oriental Memoirs were deposited in a warehouse where some twenty years later they were rediscovered and reissued with an additional twenty-seven plates. These plates come from the remaindered stock of the quarto edition of the Daniells' Oriental Scenery (see lot 201). There is one discrepancy between Abbey's copy and the present lot: pl. 110 in the present work is 'Mausoleum of Kausim Solemanee at Chunar Gur' replacing 'The Charles Satoon on the Jumna side of the Fort of Allahabad'. Abbey Travel 436. (4)
