The sitters married in 1690 in Delft: Elisabeth van Son was the daughter of Stephanus Marchand and Geertruyd Marchand, née Verburgh; Mathijs van Son was the son of Simon van Son and Sara van Son, née van Nes. He was schepen (alderman) of Geertruidenberg from 1696 until 1697 and was burgomaster of the same city in 1703-4 (H.J.A. van Son, op.cit., I, 1946, pp. 53 and 58).
