Lot Essay

In his monograph on the school of Rembrandt, Werner Sumowski (loc. cit.), listed this painting under his entry for Victors' The Gathering of the Quail and Manna in the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, California. He dates both to the artist's later period, circa 1655-76, and notes that the figure of the cow near Aaron is repeated from the Landscape with travellers and cattle at a ferry of 1650 in the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen.
