Lot Essay

John F. Herring junior was the son of the renowned Victorian horse painter John F. Herring senior (1795-1865) and was gifted with the same talent to portray animals. His work, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and Suffolk Street, depicted a rural England that was quickly disappearing at the time. Both the industrialization and emergence of suburbs imposed a great threat on the country life, leaving people longing for an eternal reminder of their once idyllic surroundings.
