Lot Essay

The present works depict, in turn, Pall Mall looking east toward Trafalgar Square from the bottom of Regent Street, with the cupola of The National Gallery and the spire of St Martin-in-the-Fields punctuating the distant skyline, and a view northward up St James's Street, with the canopied shopfront of Berry Bros. & Rudd visible at the right.

Atkison Grimshaw was a keen amateur photographer and often used photographs as a source material for his paintings. He is also believed to have used a magic lantern to enlarge a photograph and project it onto a canvas, and in the present work we find him actually working over a photographic base.
