Smith toured Italy from 1776 to 1781, sponsored by his patron, the 2nd Earl of Warwick. On his return to England he reworked many of his Italian subjects for sale or exhibition at the Society of Painters in Watercolour. Some were also published in his Select Views in Italy, 1792-1799.
