An extremely fine pair of 18-inch (45.7cm.) diameter library globes, the terrestrial 18 INCH TERRESTRIAL GLOBE by W.& A.K. JOHNSTON LIMITED Geographers, Engravers & Printers, EDINBURGH and LONDON COPYRIGHT 1907 By W.& A.K. JOHNSTON L.TD made up of two sets of twenty-four chromolithographed gores, the equatorial graduated in degrees of amplitude and azimuth, hours and minutes, the Greenwich meridian and colures graduated in degrees, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with sigils, the oceans with an analemma, ocean currents, submarine cable lines and isothermal lines for January and July, Antarctica with largely projected coastline, the continents with nation states delicately shaded in yellow, green and pink and showing numerous details including rivers, mountains, towns, cities, railways, and the Great Wall of China (minor repair beneath North Polar hour dial); the celestial 18 INCH CELESTIAL GLOBE W.& A.K. JOHNSTON LIMITED EDINBURGH & LONDON made up of two sets of twenty-four blue, yellow and gold chromolithographed gores, the equatorial graduated in degrees, the colures graduated in degrees, the ecliptic graduated in days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac, the constellations depicted in gold by mythical beasts and figures and scientific instruments and labelled in Latin, the stars in yellow to six orders of magnitude and labelled with Greek letters, the Milky Way shown with yellow stippling (small neat circular repair 11/3in. dia., slight cracking under North Polar hour dial); both spheres with stamped brass hour dial at each pole and meridian circle, the mahogany horizon with chromolithographed paper ring graduated in degrees of amplitude and azimuth, with compass directions and days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac, with brass guards and rollers for the meridian, on a fine mahogany stand after the Victorian style, with three quadrant supports with scoll tops, to turned and tapered foliate-carved pillar, on three acanthus-headed hipped outswept legs with lion's paw feet and inset castors -- 46½in.
