Lot Essay

José Malhoa is without a doubt the painter who marks the evolution towards modernism in 19th Century Portugese painting. Well known and admired both at home and abroad throughout his life, he was awarded medals and honours on both sides of the Atlantic. Malhoa was co-founder of the 'Group of Leon' and the 'Artistic Gremio', his painting of nature is spontaneous and natural representing the feelings and traditions of his country. His work of the late 90's was more rooted in the everyday, with sunfilled scenes of pastoral labour, worked with something of an ethereal touch.
