Lot Essay
This very early Qur'an section was highly revered by the Shia rulers of the Safavid dynasty, presumably because of the inscription which suggests that it was written by the Prophet's descendant, the son of 'Ali. Another Qur'an section of this period with an inscription of Husayn ibn 'Ali was sold in these rooms on 13th October 1998, lot 11. This also had Royal Safavid seals. Here part of the text of the Qur'an has been erased to add the signature; the Safavid inscriptions are written on top of this specially cleaned area.
The inscriptions on the final folio are as follows:
f.12 recto I was blessed in seeing this holy Qur'an, Isma'il al Mussavi al Husayni al Safavi Bahadur Khan AH 927 (1521 AD)
Seal impression al-mulk lilla AH 706 (1304 AD)
f.12 verso Seen through the intermediary of Abdul Hakim Rajab AH 971 (1564 AD). Firman Homayun Sharaf al-Din
By the intermediary of Allah Verdi Khan seen in the .. house ..
I was blessed in seeing this holy Qur'an, Sulayman al-Safavi al-Husayni al-Musavi Bahadur Khan (possibly hand of Shah Isma'il's brother, Sulayman, rather than the hand of Shah Sulayman)
Seal impression of Shah Jehan
