Lot Essay

In 1909 Bakst designed some costumes for a production of Aleksandr Serov's opera Judith, which Diagilev presented in Paris as part of the first 'Saison Russe'. Apparently Bakst also designed some costumes for a 1922 production of this opera that starred the famous Russian soprano Maria Kuznetsova. Generally, all of Bakst's designs associated with Judith are ascribed to either the 1909 or 1922 productions of the opera. However Bakst designed costumes for yet another Judith, the play by Bernstein. Without accurate production data, it is virtually impossible to distinguish which costume designs were for which production. See The Fine Art Society, Bakst, (London, 1976), p.41.
