Lot Essay

Of Armenian origins, the Tornikioi played an active part in military affairs during the eleventh century. This Michael combined the civilian post of judge with the military post of strategos. The theme of Samos at this date however was not under threat from any enemy, which explains why such a position was given to an man untried in miliatry affairs. (For seals of others acting in this capacity at Samos see DO Seals, 2.44.3-14)
