Lot Essay

This exceptional and unique Patek Philippe pocket watch reference 982/117J is beautifully and strikingly decorated with a bamboo design - the symbol of prosperity in Japan. The case back is embellished with hand-chased and engraved bamboo canes against a translucent green guilloche enamel background. The dial, with power reserve indication, is entirely enamelled in translucent green guilloche enamel to match the case, furthermore, it is accompanied by the original certificate and a matching 18k gold Patek Philippe watch chain.

The house of Patek Philippe, ever since it was founded in 1839, has striven to perpetuate the Genevan tradition of ‘belle horlogerie’, or ‘beautiful watchmaking’. The company’s ‘Rare Handicrafts’ division pairs the best watchmakers with the most highly-skilled craftsmen in their specialties – engravers, goldsmiths, enamellists and gem-setters. The search for perfection, the investment in time – it can take up to one year to finish an enamelled watch, high production costs and the dwindling number of highly skilled enamellists ensures that these superb pieces are produced in very limited numbers and can be considered amongst the most covetable timepieces in the world.

To the best of our knowledge, the present example has never been offered in public before.
