Lot Essay

Van Brussel first worked as a designer of wallpapers in Haarlem before specialising as a painter of flowers and fruit at some point after his marriage in 1774. All of his known dated works are from the 1780s and early 1790s. He is said to have drowned in Amsterdam at the age of forty-one.

The attribution has independently been confirmed by both Dr. Sam Segal and Mr. Fred Meijer. The latter regards it as a 'fine and characteristic work of good quality'.
